Rare freight opportunity between east coast and NT

Malu TraderNorthern Territory residents have been urged to ‘get in quick’ after shipping company Sea Swift confirmed a rare opportunity for direct freight transport between the east coast of Australia and Darwin.

The Northern Australian shipping company recently announced it will start a cruise from Darwin to Gove on board a working cargo ship – the Malu Trader – as part of a unique new tourism venture.

The Malu Trader will be leaving Cairns in early-mid September to prepare for the cruise, and will be able to carry freight from Far North Queensland on its journey to the Northern Territory.

Once it has arrived in Darwin and unloaded its freight, the vessel will be fitted out ahead of the new Sea Swift cruise beginning in October this year.

Sea Swift Northern Territory General Manager Chris Sheppard said the Malu Trader’s trip to the NT was a rare opportunity for local residents to transport large or small items between the two regions.

“We will be sailing the Malu Trader over to the NT to prepare it for what we expect will be a very popular cruise,” said Mr Sheppard.

“The vessel is a cargo ship built to carry freight, so it provides a wonderful opportunity for local residents to directly ship goods from Cairns to Darwin.

“These goods could range from a car, trailer, caravan or container, to small documents and items.

“We expect freight space on the vessel’s journey over to sell out quickly, so don’t hesitate – book now to secure your spot.”

To book your freight from Cairns to Darwin aboard the Malu Trader, contact the Sea Swift NT office on 08 8935 2400 or email ntsales@seaswift.com.au

The new Sea Swift cruise service will operate between Darwin-Nhulunbuy-Galiwinku and run weekly year round.  It’s expected once refitted to be able to hold 10 passengers.

Possible options that can be built into the service include:

  • Fly to Nhulunbuy or Galiwinku and cruise back (or vice-versa)
  • Drive to Nhulunbuy and cruise back (or vice-versa)
  • Cruise Nhulunbuy-Galiwinku-Darwin return on single voyage
  • Cruise Darwin-Nhulunbuy-Galiwinku return on single voyage
  • Cruise Darwin to Nhulunbuy or Galiwinku & stay a week (or more) returning on next voyage
